Adega São Nicolau

One of the oldest and most well known restaurants in the “Ribeira” it dates back to 1930. 3/4 owners have maintained its tradition until it was bought by António Coelho and been kept in the family for the last 25+ years. Since the tragic death of her father, Renata Coelho has been maintaining her father’s legacy; she almost grew up in the restaurant, helping here since she was 15.

The Proud family feel is very much present with the main focus being on the origin and quality of the ingredients. The suppliers have been kept since the father was running this place, in order to maintain the tradition behind the dishes. Do not let the riverside location fool you the “Vitela Arouquesa” Veal from “Arouca”, is high quality, free range and one of their signature dishes. In terms of fish I would suggest the “Polvo à lagareiro” Roasted octopus, “Lampreia” lamprey or “Sável” a Douro river fish, are also good options but seasonal dishes. You can also order with some days in advance: Wild Boar, Roasted Kid, Hare or Partridge.

There are regular clients coming to this establishment for more than 20 years, some of them have a table reserved every Saturday, they actually only call when they cannot make it to free up the table. This restaurant is a classic example of a traditional, proud, family owned establishment where Portuguese food is king and old traditions, memories and flavours are celebrated and respected.
