“Maus Amigos”, Bad Friends is a recent Snack Bar that besides its modern look still wears the Portuguese cultural traditions strong. They have been open since only march 2015 and are owned by Dario and Isa Carvalho.
Every Friday afternoon at 16:30 “Fado Vadio” Stray “Fado” is held here, and it is quite popular, so I suggest that you get there early if you don’t want to be standing the whole time. I only come to “Maus Amigos” on Fridays as this is the best time to come and experience the traditional snacks they make as well as local Fado Voices.
The specialities range from €1.50-€2.50 in price, you can eat, “Bifana” Stewed pork meat sandwich. “Moelas” Chicken gizzards served in a tomato sauce. “Tripas Enfarinhadas Fritas” tripe that is stuffed with bread and then deep-fried, hmm crispy goodness. “Pica-Pau” Fried and stewed stroganoff style beef served with a mustard sauce. “Caldo Verde” Kale and potato soup served with a slice of chorizo. For desert you can order “Bolo de Bolacha” a cake made with biscuits and cream. “Tarte de maracuja” passion fruit tart. “Sobremesa foleira” a special desert that includes cookies, fruit, fresh cream and port wine.
If you are around the centre of town on a Friday and are looking for a traditional experience, this is an ideal place to absorb some Portuguese culture and eat some typical Portuguese snacks. Even though the place is called “Maus Amigos” you will definitely make new friends here.
